Greg Jackson Weighs In on Electric School Bus Transportation for District Administration Magazine
Greg Jackson weighs in as an expert on electric school bus transportation for District Administration, an online magazine for school district leaders.
School Bus Logistics' Greg Jackson brought his school bus transportation expertise to District Administration Magazine's latest article on electric vehicles. DA Magazine is a digital publication specializing in thought leadership for school district leaders — and Jackson weighed in on the financial, infrastructure, and operational realities of transitioning to electric school buses.
The Long-Term Financial Case for Electric School Buses
One of the biggest hesitations school districts face when considering electric buses is upfront cost. But Jackson argues the long-term math works in districts' favor.
"It's going to pay for itself over the lifespan of that bus," Jackson told DA. "Now, you're not paying for the parts necessary for an engine, which will constantly need servicing. A battery will give you about eight years of operation."
The savings go beyond parts and maintenance. Electric buses eliminate fuel costs entirely, and many districts are finding federal and state grant funding available specifically for EV fleet transitions — offsetting much of the initial investment.
Infrastructure Is the Biggest Challenge
While the financial case is compelling, Jackson was candid about the operational hurdles districts need to plan for before making the switch.
"Infrastructure is one of the biggest challenges for school districts because electric buses require more spacing than diesel buses or any fossil fuel vehicle," says Jackson. "You've got to make sure you have chargers in place. You'll have to work with your local electric companies to see if your grid can withstand the impact of charging and maintaining that bus."
This isn't a reason to avoid EVs — it's a reason to plan carefully. Districts that rush into EV adoption without assessing their electrical infrastructure often face costly surprises. A thorough operational review before purchasing is essential.
A Historic Shift for Student Transportation
The DA Magazine article frames electric vehicle transportation as "the largest transformation the industry has seen in its 100-plus years of existence." That's not hyperbole. The shift from diesel to electric touches every part of a transportation department — procurement, maintenance, driver training, routing, and facilities.
For transportation directors, the question is no longer whether EVs are coming — it's whether your district is ready for them.
